Thank you to Lisa for hosting me today.
This summer I had amazing opportunity to take part in the Save the Ta-tas Summer Anthologies. Although my story has a summer theme, you may not know summer is a little different in Ireland. Our summer begins the first day of May and ends the first day of August. The Summer Prince, my contribution to Summer Breeze, happens at the festival of Beltaine(Beltane). This is the Celtic celebration to welcome summer.
In the old days young couples disappeared into the woods for more private celebrations, so what better time and place to tell a tale of true love?
There are all sorts of traditions associated with Beltaine. Bonfires are lit to purify the land. One tradition says that all fires inside the home must be extinguished May eve, not so much as a candle should burn indoors. Only after sunrise, a flame is taken from the bonfire and returned to the house.
The veil between our world and the fair folk world becomes almost non-existent. So, just in case, never take food from a stranger. As we all know, one sip of drink or morsel of food from a faery means they can take you back to their world and keep you there forever. It’s also a good idea to carry a small piece of iron in your pocket just in case.
A child born on May Day will be blessed with ‘The Sight’, an ability to see fairies, although traditional also says they will have bad luck.
The Summer Anthologies are for a great cause, so why not combine some reading with feeling good about helping raise awareness for Breast Cancer. Just to pique your interest, here is a teaser from The Summer Prince.
“Who’s there?” I called out, shuffling backward, cradling my injured hand to my chest until I felt rough bark against my spine. It was solid…reassuring, something dependable after all the craziness this night had brought. The thick canopy of leaves and branches overhead blocked out the moon and scattered stars. I couldn’t hear anything but the rustling of the leaves, sounding as if the trees were whispering to each other. I suddenly felt like an uninvited guest for the second time tonight.
“Who’s there?” I called again. Already my stomach was twisting into a tight knot. I knew exactly who it was.
It was probably the stupidest thing I had ever done. What kind of idiot runs into a forest after dark, especially knowing there is a strange guy skulking around in the shadows?
“I’ll scream,” I warned him, bending down to grope inconspicuously in the mulch. I needed to find something sharp, maybe a broken piece of branch, to use as a weapon.
“Don’t,” a disembodied voice called back.
Instantly the hairs on my arms rose as a shiver rushed over me. His voice, with its crystal clear tone… I had heard it before. His voice had called me here.
My first Novel, Shades of Atlantis also has a Celtic theme. To celebrate The Sizzling
