Author Sandra Wright talks about The Write Stuff + giveaway

The Write Stuff

I know some amazing people.  Whenever we catch up they usually have me killing myself laughing and wondering just how the hell they manage to do have the stuff that they do.  Here’s the thing though; when they’re bringing me up to speed on their goings on, I’m alone at the time.  This is probably the part where I tell you that for me, writing feels very much like socially acceptable schizophrenia.  I still have no idea where my characters have come from, only that they simply appeared in my mind’s eye one day as fully realised human beings.  I envy the writer who can get a story idea,  write out the story arc from start to finish, and then work in a linear fashion.  I tried that once, and it turned out the joke was on me.  Screeds of notes were written about what each character was going to do and how they were going to react. Meanwhile, the characters took one look at that and said “Nice one blondie, here’s what’s really going to happen …”, and indeed it was so.  I still look at that outline sometimes and shake my head.  What the hell was I thinking, to assume that I might have some sort of say in what was going on?

The story I’m talking about is of course, Take the Cake, and those characters took me on quite a ride.  I set out to write something with excitement, and adventure and really wild things (a merit badge to anyone that picks where that saying is from!), but instead what I got was what I can only describe as somewhere between ‘food for thought’ and ‘chewing gum for the brain’.

I’m working on another book these days - Tailor Made -  and of course the characters scoff at my half-baked ideas (pardon the pun) and just do what they want, when they want.  The ending has already been written, but now I’ve got to wait and see how on earth they’re all going to get there.  When writers’ block kicks in – as it inevitably does – my characters wait until I’m somewhere impossible for me to write ideas down.  The shower seems to be favourite because as soon as the water hits my arse they start talking.  Another time is j-u-s-t when I’m about to fall asleep.  You know how some people keep a notepad and pen by their bed, or dictate a voice memo into their phone?  My notebook looked like I’d tried to write something whilst in the grip of a powerful seizure, and the voice memo was … well.  Let’s just say if you heard it I’d be hard pressed to prove that tequila wasn’t involved.  Another great time they pick is when I’m driving, which was led to conversations along the lines of:

Me:       I’ve just realised why Wren’s so frisky when it comes to dating!
Friend: That’s great, but you’ve just totally missed the turn.  What the hell is wrong with you?

In spite of all that I still maintain that writing is one of the most fun things you can do with your clothes on.  Writing creates a bridge between reality and fantasy, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Now if you’re curious about meeting the characters who lead me on such a merry chase, here’s your chance!  Comment to be in the running to win a print copy of Take the Cake!

Cheers,
Sandy

Blurb taken from Goodreads:

Sometimes you just have to take life
one cupcake at a time.

Kate Shannon is happy with the way things are. Granted she lost her parents at a young age, but she has made a good life for herself which includes a legacy of misheard song lyrics and a malfunctioning gaydar. Kate doesn't have a Mr. Right, or even a Mr. Right Now, but what she does have is a thriving bakery in Greenwich Village called Take The Cake, and that's just the way she likes it. Better still is the competition with her barista as they try to outsmart each other every morning with their cupcake/quote war. Firing shots like Woodstock Afterburn and Vegan Rehab is enough to keep her on her toes. Who has time for dating?

Across town, Michael Forrester has gone from enjoying the thrill of success to wallowing in the depths of despair. With a collection of critically acclaimed novels in his wake, Michael now spends his days battling writer's block, avoiding his publisher's calls whenever possible. With nowhere to go and nothing to write, Michael's just in time to find exactly what he didn't know he was looking for. What happens next is what you get when you combine friendship, cupcakes, and good coffee with a substance called 'the eternal breath,' all mixed up in a city like New York. Forget what you know about love, and take the cake.

Hi Sandra and Lisa! That's fascinating that you've already written the ending to Tailor Made, Sandra, and are trying to figure out how to get there. It's very different from how I work. I guess the cool part is you don't have anxiety about wrapping it up well, since that part's already done! Please enter me for the giveaway.
